RV Traveling with a Pet
RV traveling with your pet is a great way to enjoy a vacation without leaving your furry best friend behind. Many pets can enjoy a safe and fun RV trip with the right preparation.
Below, you'll find our favorite RV travel tips for bringing along your pet. If you need a service appointment before your road trip or want to look at campers for sale, visit Cliff Jones RV in Sealy, TX. We proudly serve those in Houston and Katy, TX.
Create Comfort with the RV
Before you start traveling with your pet, it's important to get your pet comfortable with the RV. Remember that new environments can be stressful for animals. They don't know whether the unknown territory is full of predators or threats! You'll want to slowly introduce them to the RV and show that it's a fun and safe environment.
Gather up the family inside your rig. Have everyone relaxed and talking in calm voices. Let your pet enter the camper on their own time. Fill the inside with treats and toys to showcase that the RV is a safe, enjoyable place. Once your pet is comfortable with your stationary rig, you can go on a few short rides. Slowly build up the time inside your camper until your pet is ready for the open road.
Traveling with Your Pet on the Road
It's important that you don't let your pet freely wander your camper while it is in motion. First, it's easy for them to get harmed. If you have to suddenly slam on the brakes or get in a wreck, they could get tossed about and easily injured. Second, it's easy for them to interfere with the driver's ability to safely drive. They could try to climb on your lap, get tangled up in your legs, and so on. It's best to keep your pet secure in a crate or carrier anytime you are in motion.
You'll also want to be sure to take plenty of breaks while traveling with a pet. Animals will need time to eat, drink, and go to the bathroom. They also need time to get out and stretch their legs just like their human counterparts. Always put the leash on your animal before exiting the vehicle. Your dog will love taking in all the exciting smells at every rest stop and viewpoint!
Maintain Routine
A key part of traveling with a pet is trying to keep up with your usual routines. This will help keep your pet's stress lower and keep them more comfortable. Try to feed them around the same time as you do at home. Keep bedtimes, walk times, and wake-up times as consistent as possible. If your pet needs medicine or shots, do them at the same times as normal.
