Top Labor Day Camping Spots Near Houston

Labor Day weekend is the chance for everyone to get one last weekend getaway in before the “official” end of summer.  Many water parks and theme parks begin to shut down for the season, as well as several campgrounds or state parks, depending upon their location.  And many people clean up their boats and RV’s and put them away until next year.  So, what will you be doing for your Labor Day weekend festivities?  Try one of these great camping spots within driving distance of the Houston area.

    One Last Lake Hurrah

    Inks Lake State Park

Located in Texas Hill Country, a little farther northwest of Austin, sits the beautiful Inks Lake State Park.  It’s a favorite among outdoor adventurers because of the many activities you can participate in here.  From backpacking, geocaching, and birdwatching to boating, skiing, fishing, and even cliff diving; there is plenty to do to keep you busy this Labor Day weekend. Hike the over 9 miles of hiking trails or visit the Devil’s Waterhole, a popular destination within Inks Lake State Park.

There are over 200 campsites available within the park and 22 cabins.  Many of the campsites are lakeside so you have ample opportunity for water access right at your doorstep.

    Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Sitting on a 3,000 acre reservoir just north of Dallas, Ray Roberts Lake and State Park is another great spot to spend your Labor Day camping weekend.  They have miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, a large lake and beach area so you can soak up some sun, and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.  Make use of the lake and go boating, skiing, swimming or fishing.

There are a number of primitive campsites available; including equestrian sites so you can rest assured there is plenty of space for your equine friend(s).  Spend the weekend “roughing it” and enjoying the last few weeks of the great weather.

    One Last Hiking Hurrah

    Colorado Bend State Park

Located 1.5 miles southwest of Austin, this state park offers a lot of adventure for those who seek it.  Known for its 65ft cascading waterfall, Gorman Falls is a tourist’s favorite here.  Enjoy the challenging hike to view the falls up close.  There are plenty of spring fed swimming holes that are a main attraction as well.  Visitors can relax and take in the sights and sounds of nature at its best.

Not only are there 35 miles of hiking and biking trails to keep you busy, but you can also go boating, fishing, and paddling down the many streams that flow through the park.  You also might want to enjoy a guided cave tour and explore the majestic underground caverns of the Texas terrain.

Campsites are available in many different locations throughout Colorado Bend State Park.  You have the option of drive-in sites, walk-in tent sites, or primitive hike-in sites.  Be sure to pack accordingly. Daily temperatures can still reach in the 90’s in September, but the nights cool off quickly.

No matter what your plans are for the long weekend, be safe and enjoy the last holiday camping trip of the season!
